Bible is the first subject studied in our house each day. Many times I explained to my boys, when they were small, that God must always come first in our day, so when those days came that I was tempted to put something else first, my little men were quick to remind me of God’s words and my own. They were great at keeping me accountable.
A little while ago I started wondering about how ‘first’ we were really making God’s time – first, after getting dressed, making beds, tidying rooms, putting on a load of washing, straightening the bathrooms, taking out the rubbish, making breakfast, sometimes reviewing our memory work while we wait for breakfast, setting the table, having breakfast, and brushing teeth. So, while God was first in our ‘school’ day, He wasn’t first in our day. Clearly we needed a change.
At the end of last term we made a change to our routine. Now, instead of all that other stuff, the first thing I do is take our Bible and devotional books down to the boys’ room and we meet with God in bed. I rouse the critters a little, make the room light and then begin to read.
You know what? God is much better at getting my boys out of bed than I ever was. I used to have to wake them repeatedly, coax/beg/demand that they get up and prepare for the day, and wait a ridiculous amount of time before they would appear half asleep and still in pjs. With God waking them, we read and listen to His words, read our devotional (presently, “Herein Is Love: Exodus” which I highly, highly recommend, along with all of the books in this series), and by then the boys are ready to jump out of bed and start their day off well. Then we each do our chores, meet in the kitchen to review our memory work while preparing breakfast and then sit and listen to “Uncle Rick Reads the Proverbs” over breakfast. This is a much more pleasant start to our day.
The added bonus is that we actually have more time for school this way. So we can actually have our cake and eat it too it seems, IF we do things in the correct order.
Always learning and improving 🙂
