Weekend Art

17 Feb

Art just doesn’t seem to be getting done during the school week so I’m thinking about making art a subject that we do on the weekend or during the holidays.

The idea certainly fits my beliefs about art.  To me art isn’t an ‘academic’ subject.  It’s a pleasurable hobby, like crochet or knitting, that should happen once our real work is completed.  Yes, there are a minority who make their career out of it but that’s a terrible reason for forcing everyone to study it.

(Of course, art appreciation is a different matter.  To be culturally literate you should know something about the major artists and artworks.)

We do enjoy creating things though.  Brayden particularly.  But art isn’t going to be the boys’ main direction in life.  Hence all my thinking about moving art out of our school hours, and into our leisure hours.

We did two art projects this Sunday afternoon.  I found a few 3D sculpturey things to do.

First we made this 3D woven pillow.  Super easy.

However something went a tad wrong and we didn’t end up with the proper woven look.  Oh well.  Maybe we’ll try it again another time.

To us it’s still pretty cool. I love the 3D effect these produced.

Our second project was a 3D paper cube.  These were very fast to make.

Then, jointly using our cubes, we enjoyed photographing several different cube sculptures. Ideally we should have made more, but, like I said, art isn’t our draw card.

We enjoy dabbling but there’s many more things we’d rather be doing.  🙂

How do you handle art?

Hey Tracey – love that paper weaving – what a great thing to do on a rainy day! We’re going to give that a go!

Hmmm…I think I disagree. I think art can and is very important to the creative process. It must however, come in many forms of media, so one can discover the best and most creative form suited to each individual. For eg. My computer guy loves dabbling with windows paint. He’s just installed another version, and tends to show his very creative side doing that. Is that ART? I think it is. Give him some other form of materials, and he’ll scoff. Whereas my dd loves, loves, loves the traditional forms. Art should be promoted in everyone’s home i think, because being creative helps lead to some marvelous ideas in other subject areas as well. It has also been seen to be a great release of creative energy for some of the best thinkers. Just my opinion. 🙂

Not saying it does have ‘value’ but that it has lesser value in our home than Math, Language, Geography, Science and History say. So it’s being shafted to our leisure hours. Rest assured, there is still plenty of art happening, just not in our prime time.

Hi Tracey, these look fun! Are you getting your inspiration from a particular book or website?

No one particular resource, but nearly always an art teacher’s blog. They come up with some great ideas.

he he, I know lol! You post such wonderful art/craft posts. Despite art taking a backseat in your academic priority list, you have been displaying some wonderfully creative experiences for your sons. From your home art time to your Art Gallery visits. Relax, and enjoy these times and realize that you’re good at it! From one homeschooling family to another…remember learning happens all the time, and at any time. 😀 Hugs to you.

All the time?? Are you sure?? This morning I wasn’t sure there was anything being transferred over those synapses.

Love the projects, they turned out so nicely. I think decided what is best for your family is the way to go with art. It wasn’t one of the main focuses for our days either.
